From Slogan to Shirt: How a FranklyTho Design Comes to Life

A FranklyTho tee starts long before anything gets printed. From finding a line worth wearing to typography, colour, placement and oversized fit, here’s the thinking behind turning one sentence into a finished statement tee.

From Slogan to Shirt: How a FranklyTho Design Comes to Life

A FranklyTho T-shirt usually starts with something significantly smaller than a T-shirt.

One sentence.

Maybe even four words.

Something someone says in a group chat.

Something you think during a meeting but wisely keep to yourself.

Something that sounds completely normal until you read it twice.

The difficult part isn't finding sentences.

The difficult part is finding one that deserves an entire shirt.

That's where the FranklyTho design process begins.

From the first line to the final oversized tee, every choice has the same job: make the statement easy to understand, easy to wear and recognisably FranklyTho.

1. It Starts With the Sentence

FranklyTho is statement apparel.

So the words come first.

Not an illustration.

Not a giant decorative logo.

Not a graphic looking for something meaningful to sit underneath it.

The sentence is the idea.

We look for thoughts that already feel familiar:

  • The excuse everyone has used
  • The thought nobody says at work
  • The dating pattern we'd rather call character development
  • The social situation you agreed to before remembering who you are
  • The very confident conclusion reached using questionable evidence

That's why lines such as:

BAD AT TEXTING.
GREAT IN PERSON.

work for FranklyTho.

You don't need to know a fictional character, meme or complicated reference to understand it.

You've probably met this person.

You may unfortunately be this person.

2. Then It Has to Pass the FranklyTho Filter

Something can be funny and still not belong on a shirt.

That's an important part of the process.

Before a line feels like FranklyTho, we ask a few simple questions.

Would someone actually wear this?

Not just screenshot it.

Not just send it to a friend.

Wear it outside. Voluntarily.

Does it make sense quickly?

A person shouldn't need footnotes to understand the back of your T-shirt.

Does it sound human?

If the line sounds like a marketing department trying very hard to sound relatable, that's usually a problem.

Will it still work after the first laugh?

Novelty disappears quickly.

Relatability lasts considerably longer.

Is the joke punching in the right direction?

Our brand voice is dry and deadpan, but the goal isn't cruelty.

There is plenty to joke about in our own decisions.

No shortage of inventory there.

3. Every Line Needs the Right Mood

Once a line works, we ask where it belongs in the FranklyTho world.

The current collection is organised around four moods.

Sarcastic

Dry observations. Eye-roll energy. Completely calm delivery.

CALM DOWN.
I'M MAKING IT WORSE.

Petty

Not holding a grudge.

Simply maintaining accurate historical records.

NOT MAD.
JUST TAKING NOTES.

Wholesome-ish

Personal growth with a few remaining terms and conditions.

I DON'T HATE MY EX.
I LOVE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

Adulting

Professionally functioning.

Emotionally reviewing the invoice.

EMPLOYED AGAINST MY WILL.

The mood doesn't only help organise the store.

It helps keep the voice consistent.

Different jokes.

Same universe.

4. Then We Start Removing Words

Writing something short is often harder than writing something long.

A T-shirt makes that very obvious.

Every unnecessary word takes up visual space.

Every extra line changes the composition.

And every explanation makes the joke slightly less confident.

So a line gets stronger when it can say exactly what it needs to say and then stop.

For example:

MY EX HAS GREAT TASTE.
I'M PROOF.

You could add several sentences explaining the relationship history.

Please don't.

That's what friends are for.

There was almost certainly more to the story. The shirt does not require it.

5. Typography Becomes the Graphic

Once the words are right, typography takes over.

In a statement tee, the letters aren't simply carrying the design.

They are the design.

That means decisions about:

  • Font weight
  • Capitalisation
  • Line breaks
  • Letter spacing
  • Line spacing
  • Print width
  • Relative scale
  • The amount of empty space around the statement

all affect how the sentence feels.

Compare:

I'M FINE.

with:

The group chat disagrees.

They don't need equal visual volume.

One is the claim.

The other is the evidence.

6. The Design Needs a Reading Order

Some FranklyTho designs contain one clear statement.

Others work as a setup and response.

When that happens, visual hierarchy matters.

The viewer should instinctively know what to read first.

That's why you'll often see:

  • A stronger first phrase
  • A smaller secondary line
  • Clear separation between the two thoughts
  • The FranklyTho signature below the main statement

The typography should explain the joke before anyone consciously thinks about typography.

If people are analysing the kerning before understanding the sentence, we may have become distracted.

Hierarchy tells you where to look before you realise someone planned where to look.

7. Then the Statement Has to Fit the Shirt

A slogan can look excellent on a computer screen and completely wrong once it is scaled onto an actual garment.

The print needs enough presence to be readable without taking over the entire shirt.

We think about:

  • Distance from the neckline
  • Overall print width
  • Overall print height
  • Where the text sits between the shoulders
  • How it relates to the oversized silhouette
  • How much space sits between the slogan and FranklyTho signature

This is also why the back works so well for the brand.

An oversized tee gives the statement a large, relatively uninterrupted canvas.

The front can stay simple.

The back can cause the problem.

We could have put a tiny quote over the heart.

But then the people walking behind you would have nothing to do.

8. Colour Should Help the Message, Not Fight It

FranklyTho doesn't need every slogan in every colour in the visible spectrum.

We prefer a controlled system.

Black and white tees provide a clean foundation because they make the statement easy to read and easy to style.

The typography can then use strong contrast:

  • Light typography against black
  • Dark typography against white
  • Selected accent treatments where they make sense

The point is consistency.

When you see several FranklyTho designs together, they should look related.

Like a family.

A family with concerning group-chat history, perhaps.

9. The Graphic Is Designed for an Oversized Tee

Print design and garment design shouldn't be treated as two unrelated decisions.

FranklyTho adult tees currently use a unisex oversized fit in sizes XS–3XL, with 180 GSM cotton.

That silhouette matters to the graphic.

A wider back gives the typography space.

Relaxed shoulders affect where the graphic appears when worn.

Fabric structure affects how the print sits while the tee moves.

So instead of asking:

“Can this slogan fit on a shirt?”

the better question is:

“Does this design belong on this shirt?”

Small difference.

Better result.

You can read more about the garment itself in The FranklyTho Standard: What Makes Our Tees Different .

The garment and the graphic have to work as one design.

10. Then We Add the FranklyTho Signature

The main slogan gets the attention.

The smaller FranklyTho mark underneath tells you where it came from.

We deliberately don't want the brand name to fight the statement for attention.

The hierarchy should remain:

  1. The thought
  2. The punchline or secondary line
  3. The brand

Because if the biggest idea on every shirt were simply our own logo, the entire concept would become significantly less interesting.

11. The Final Test: Does It Still Feel Like Something You'd Wear?

This is probably the most important question.

Because the internet contains an unlimited supply of funny sentences.

That does not mean all of them need merchandise.

Before a FranklyTho design makes sense as a finished piece, it should still work as clothing.

We want the result to be:

  • Easy to understand
  • Visually balanced
  • Readable
  • Consistent with the brand
  • Easy to style
  • Funny without becoming costume

Put differently:

Would you actually leave the house wearing it?

That's the test.

What Doesn't Make the Cut?

Not every idea becomes a product.

Some are too long.

Some are funny once and then immediately retire.

Some depend too heavily on a trend.

Some look good as words but don't translate well into a strong graphic.

And some simply don't sound like FranklyTho.

Saying no to those ideas is part of creating a recognisable brand.

Otherwise the collection becomes:

Some shirts we found funny at different times.

Which isn't really a brand system.

Why Consistency Matters

If you put several FranklyTho tees next to one another, we want them to feel connected even when the slogans are completely different.

That's what a design system does.

It creates rules without making everything identical.

Across the collection, that means recurring ideas such as:

  • Oversized silhouettes
  • Statement-led back designs
  • Strong typography
  • Clear reading hierarchy
  • Controlled colour combinations
  • Consistent FranklyTho branding
  • Dry, recognisable humor

The slogan can change.

The personality shouldn't disappear.

“The shirt shouldn't invent your personality.
It should recognise it.”

— FranklyTho

One Design Becomes Part of Something Bigger

Once a statement joins the collection, it doesn't sit completely on its own.

It lives beside other designs with the same visual language and brand voice.

Someone who relates to:

BAD AT TEXTING.
GREAT IN PERSON.

might also understand:

SORRY I'M LATE.
I DIDN'T WANT TO COME.

And suddenly one T-shirt becomes a fairly detailed personality assessment.

Efficient.

From One Line to a Finished Tee

A finished FranklyTho design might look simple.

Ideally, it should.

The work is in deciding what doesn't need to be there.

Start with a line worth wearing.

Remove what it doesn't need.

Give the important words the right weight.

Give the statement enough room.

Put it on a garment designed to carry it.

Keep the entire thing recognisably FranklyTho.

Then let somebody wear it into a café, airport, office, party or family gathering and create the rest of the story themselves.

Preferably without explaining the shirt.

If the design works, they won't need to.

One sentence. Your problem now.

Frequently Asked Questions About FranklyTho Designs

Where do FranklyTho slogans come from?

FranklyTho designs are built around relatable observations, dry humor and familiar situations. The goal is for a line to feel like something a real person might think or say rather than simply creating a graphic around a random phrase.

Why does FranklyTho use typography instead of large illustrations?

Because the statement itself is the central design element. Keeping the surrounding graphic system simple gives the words more visual impact and makes the finished tee easier to style.

Why are many FranklyTho designs printed on the back?

An oversized back provides enough space for larger statement typography while allowing the front of the garment to stay visually clean. It also creates a consistent design language across the collection.

Why are some parts of a slogan larger than others?

Typography hierarchy establishes a reading order. A stronger first phrase can communicate the main thought while a smaller secondary line delivers context or the punchline.

Are all FranklyTho tees oversized?

The current adult tee collection is built around a unisex oversized fit. Current adult sizes run from XS to 3XL.

What fabric do FranklyTho adult tees use?

The current adult tee collection uses 180 GSM heavyweight cotton. The fabric weight helps support the relaxed oversized silhouette while remaining suitable for everyday wear.
